Fox Hill Farm chose to raise heritage breed animals because of their ability to thrive on a diet of pasture grasses – which is what all ruminants are “designed” to eat. We have found that the British White, Murray Grey and Red Devon breeds grow well on our land, which contains a variety of native plants as well as clover, alfalfa and timothy. Together, these plants create a tasty “salad” for our cows and allow them to choose what their bodies tell them they need at any particular time during the growing season. They also can forage on hedgerows containing grape leaves, nettles and burdocks. In winter we feed them dry hay and “baleage” harvested off our farm as well.
